In the 18th century the fashion for high status women was very wide dress skirts supported underneath by structures called panniers.
The style reached an apogee in 1740 when skirts extended more than an arm’s length on each side. This meant that women had to walk sideways into a room. Women of short stature looked like children in go-carts.
